+5°C, light chilly easterly
I have a working compost heap at last. Only took 3 hours digging to get it right. Last time, when I thought it was done, I found concrete slab underneath. I got that one out and found another beneath, to my surprise. Now it’s done, there is no real effort to run the thing. My little invertebrate labourers are kept warm with a cover and a few bags of horse manure, plus a full wheelie-bin of house-scraps to kick start the whole colony. Thanks to Ken Thompson for the encouragement.
We’ve got an old double chambered coal bunker which has served for compost making for as long as we’ve lived here. I always like to examine it in spring as the slow-worms nest in there. It makes beautiful black crumbly compost. I layer garden waste, scrap paper, egg shells & old tea bags and kitchen waste and empty out the odd grandchild’s nappy into it mainly for the phosphor, along with the occasional spadeful of soil. Each batch takes a year or so to complete fermentation. It’s great. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the encouragement. I put a bag of fresh horse manure to get it started, it has a hessian cover so it should be all nice and warm in there. I’m very envious of your slow-worms.
