One dog’s nightmare

-1 to 5°C, dry & v cold.

We know dogs deam, but do they have nightmares too? At about 5am today, I heard this haunting, melancholic one note howl from Rosie. She was sleeping in here, near the door ( as usual) so I knew which dog it was, so I called her over and made a fuss and spoke in a calm voice. She wagged.

Ice: there isn’t much ice about because it is so very dry: but it seems that Walsall haven’t gritted their roads today. Under the bridge near school, there was a layer of ice about 1cm thick from field runoff. I braked and stopped just short of this threatening mirror in the road. But it was so bad that it was difficult to even get up on the pavement, with oncoming traffic I didn’t want to fall in front of a car. This weather is due to be the same all week.

A dull day shining

7°C, rain, less wind.

As promised- photos of shiny things. They’re pedals, not fitted yet, but I expect they’ll bung up with mud less often. Admire them before they get used, oily and scratched. Today has been a day of rain, lots of it as has most of this week, will it flood soon?
The wet landscape should be good for photographs, but for the lack of light. I’m currently looking into a camera upgrade to solve that problem. Mine isn’t too good when set to higher ASA speeds- it gets rather grainy.
3DS Max: Digger again, oh no! (-oh yes!). Added some scene objects, to give it some space, the mobile phone mast was the most satisfying- mostly because it took a relatively short time to make; then I used a x-ref scene contaiing a Cathedral.
I fancy adding a small flock of birds next. Don’t hold your breath.

Is it really?

3°C, grey & rain threatening

Woke up not really believing it is actually my birthday; the confusion is- it isn’t raining.
I have more iPods now than I did yesterday, the previous figure stood at none. saturday is definitely the best day to have a birthday, last year I was finishing off writing reports after getting home from work.
Add on a nice book and things to eat, including some cheeses that I have never heard of before).

It has rained.

Snowman

7°C, Snow, slushy though.

Thaw: it seemed to melt as fast as it fell, but still someone near here built an amazingly good snowman.Good enough to take a picture of.

very November

4°C, heavy rain, windy too. No cycling.

It’s getting worse, as the average height of british men increases, the average length of trousers in the shops gets shorter. The longest ones M&S do now is 33", it used to be 35". I need 36" waist to go with the 36" inside leg. Can you tell I had another frustrating and wasteful shopping trip today. why do so many people like shopping, I can’t see it- it’s infuriating.

Novermber: here we are, cold, dank, dull & grey, topped up with heavy rain. It must be November.

Now it’s snowing.

A week of repairs

13°C, misty.

Where has the time gone, it has been quite a busy week. Including Tuesday- fast for a blood test. That was annoying- all down to a low IQ phlebotomist. I was left thinking over the word phlebotomist – a medical professional who extracts blood samples. After the appointment, my mind wandered over to the search for a word for a medical professional who takes the piss.
Today, no cycling- we had a nice walk instead, only slugged by last night’s late finish.
The winter bike is back on the road, it’s so gooood to have it back & running.

Empty handed

13°C, clouds 100%

Visit Birmingham to buy clothes. No luck , could only find warm thick heavy ones; they would not be suitable for someone who works in a place heated like an old-people’s home. So I returned empty handed.
Artemesia "Powys Castle". Bought one depite the contentious link with Absinthium. I’m not at all sure how close this variety is. It smells right however. The photo below is a wild variety, Artemesia Vulgaris, "Mugwort". Wormwood still eludes me in the wild, it is said to be quite common in the Midlands, especially likes sandy soils, which are common in Birmingham.

Adrenaline

22°C, clear today., Yesterday C=32 miles; day before C=51.

Young Oak: Below is a picture of the Acorns from a young oak tree. Some of them are malformed- perhaps due to the gall wasps laying eggs on many of the leaves. I have posted pictures of those here before.

All that post-virus malaise has gone. Yesterday, I rode for 32 miles with a bloke in his 70s. We swapped good stories, had a lot in common- he was formerly a teacher and we shared a number of other coincidental experiences. I rode to get rid of those butterflies that come of excessive adrenaline.
Yesterday was a notable high for another reason, it came like a present – realising that we had another 2 weeks before term starts. I was so excited & relieved by that discovery.

It arrived today- a very shiny thing. Hold it up to the light, and it looks flawless, solid, impenetrable. It’s going to be good, I like it.

Wednesday

18°C, rain

It’s Wednesday, and I forgot to put the bins out!

Linseed: another day another layer, just like old times. The linseed layers are rather patchy, but as layers are piled on, the surface gets more lustrous with a better contrast in illuminosity between light and shadow.
No new ground is being trod on this one, it is more of a refresher. It’s enjoyable enough, it makes me think about painting, and doesn’t cost much time, each session is about an hour, and I get a finished oil painitng after a few weeks.

However, I am planning a quite a complex one for the day this is finished though. The idea has been rattling about since the winter.
Drawing it up will be done differently.

Chornobyl: interesting BBC links debating the ecology of the Zone.
Some useful disagreement there.
