12°C, little of the promised rain.

Spammers have gone all ecumenical today:
And to pass, when her fair is full and fish and the oil unto Zechariah
Come, fifty loops in my god called to alive:
The Shorts are out! The Gap is Good! Take advantage!
RREF has been on a steady rise for a week with HUGE volume. Now the
shorts created a gap providing a second chance to get in on RREF.
Don’t be the one that missed out be the one who rakes it in next
week. Grab RREF first thing Thursday morning.
Alternative: Who will act as gatekeeper to the gatekeepers?
Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.
From the Robert Frost poem ‘Mending Wall’

Who knows where such words doth cometh. Senders now enlisted in the great book of Junk-senders, forever to be deleted with callous automation, unseen by human eye from this day forth.

Have them chipped!

10°C, rain

The (un)shaggy dog story: The Friary School’s caretaker found a stray dog on the school grounds, so Hannah volunteered to sort it out. She called me as soon as I got home to take the dog to the local Vet. That dog was male and somewhere between a Lurcher and Weinerana, a beautiful looking dog with a calm disposition. He seemed quite unflustered as I put him in the car – more fascinated by the scent of Poodle than worried that I was taking him away.

Anyway, it turned out that the dog had got ID chips embedded and was registered at that very Vet’s surgery, his name was "Storm".
The moral of the story is to make sure I get my two hounds chipped. The Owner was on his way as I drove home.

In-class demo: these can go terribly wrong, but the picture below was done with a very small group and that makes concentration easier. It seemed to have a good effect on the kid’s work too, she was trying to complete a painting that had been worked on for months and not really going anywhere. Materials: acrylics (white, flesh, burnt sienna & burnt umber) onto cheapo brown sugar paper. Not bad for 10 minutes while I was talking to someone.

Michael Finnessy: Mars + Venus; the CD was delivered to me unsure that it would be like the stuff played by BBC r3. Having only played it once, I can’t say a lot, superficially it sounds like some of the Edgar Varese stuff bought a few years ago, and popularised by Frank Zappa. I don’t really have a method to explain it, but there is a vibrant space in the sound, the clusters of piano and other "classical " instruments, it mixes frantic energy and calmness closely vying for the stage. I need more of this kind of thing. Thanks to Here & Now!

Crisp sunrise

-2 to 9°C. Clear.

Suddenly autumn has changed over into a phase so different that it could have a different name. That’s right, I think there should be an extra season between September and Christmas. there is usually two distinct phases in these months, from autumn leaves turning and falling to the first winter frosts. I suggest that these seasons shouldn’t have fixed dates.

Summer: also needs to be split in two. May to July is so different to August to October, the join being where the harvest is finally in. Less need o f a flexible date here.

Below is a photo taken while I was getting ready for work this morning, while finding my thickest thermal cycling clothes. This is the scene visible from the skylight window.

Packington Pigs

17°C, clearing & windy.

Walk: it takes 1h 40′ to walk the 8 miles from Tamworth to home. Add a few minutes to stop and watch the packington pigs. I took the car to Tamworth for a service, planning to shop while it’s being done. Plans changed when they estimated a 6 hr wait- so I went into town shopping, then take the bus home. That bus left ten minutes before I got there, so I started to walk. I had this idea to catch the bus in Hopwas. Once underway though, walking has a nice feel to it, it’s warm, the scenary is interesting and the action builds a natural rhythm. I walked all the way home feeling good about it- those busses are so annoying, getting home glad I bypassed them.

waiting in the carpark

14°C, clouding over.

My socks weigh in at 12 kg!.
I know this because I weighed myself at 101Kg with them on, and then decided to try again with no socks on- then it came out at 89Kg. I don’t know why I decided that (actually I do really) but those socks feel quite light to hold. Does that mean that wearing two pairs would make getting upstairs quite difficult.

…no.

Theif, Deadly Shadow

16°C, clear & moderate S wind. C=66 miles

Glee Club: concert tonight, going out on a Sunday is an odd thing. Sundays evenings are meant for recovering from cycle rides as you all know. The show is "Suzanna And the Magical Orchestra". We have a CD so I know it will be spacious soulful and well crafted stuff. I hope they are selling LP copies  of the album again.

The dogs are cut: they are all "Poodly" as Ruth the cutter said. Judging by the way they are looking at me now, and wagging, I sense that they are grateful for the new refreshing style.

Theif: installed a new game yesterday, it’s a few years old and came with this graphics card, so last night I was in the mood for trying it. More time is needed to form anopinion, but for now it’s a calm stealthy game with a character skulking around in the shadows.

Music I’m not listening to

22°C, clouds gry & pink.

By not listening to Robert Wyatt, I didn’t miss a greater treat- yes the geese have spun their magic again in formation low over the skies of this town. You have to be quick when you hear their distant formation talk, you have to have no television on and windows open. Speed is important not because they fly quickly, but because you need to find a vantage point to see them, they fly at low altitude so dissappear behind houses or trees. Be sprightly. I stood on a bench.
Having the Television switched off and no music-noise blotting out the real world  really is living.

Crane flys: despite some insight with a working theory from yesterday, they still astonish. Eating supper tonight, one flitted a fluttery impact with my eye, in danger of trapping itself behind my glasses. Less than two seconds later it dropped into my dinner and got stuck in the viscous pesto sauce. Gently, I lifted it clear, but it was not airworthy anymore. They must be perishing by the millions in Britain this week, each life snuffed out in some bizarre unfortunate mishap. They’re clearly not destined to live long anyway so why not?

Neither of these creatures have the faintest idea of the pleasure they instill just by being.

Muji

19°C, cloudy

Shopping: bought a nice new laptop style bag from Muji. Even not owning a laptop doesn’t stop these things being useful. Muji is a very nice shop, and with my birthday coming up in a couple of months, I suggest you plan a trip there. They have likable clothes, stationary and hand-made sketchbooks- of which I bought a little one today.

It’s two weeks since we started back at school. Still we are plagued by uneven sleep routines, bouts of tiredness or surplus energy. Barely done any painting in the last few weeks, though drawing is coming back. Is it always like this at this time of year?

Actually, yes.

Actionscript: I really need a usable book that I can learn Actionscript in Flash 8. It’s really hard to decide on which one, there are dozens. Any suggestions?

News: is full of a story that is silly enough to be in the Castle of Camelot when full of knights. The Pope has finally apologised for some citation he made in a lecture in Regensburgh University. While you are on a roll mate, any chance of looking at the Catholic Church’s support for the Nazi Genocide? Your organisation still has dirty hands from that one. When you have done that, can we go onto the next one on the list?
….this may take some time.

On the other side, what do we think of a group of protestors- complaining about linking Mohammod with "evil & inhuman" behaviour? It’s the bit where those indignant men burnt an effigy of that pope, isn’t that a symbolic death threat? Those chaps aren’t doing the cause any good are they?

They can’t be as silly as the Yorkshire hens besieging schools with their packets of deep fried chips.

Sounding any clearer?

18°C, clear

We’ve been given a newer TV, one of far higher quality than the other. this has no green patches at the sides of the image, we can hear what most people are saying and the colours are all much easier to believe. One aspect of it leaves me speechless- no-one else has noticed the sound quality. Now, why is this? Is there something in common with a recent decision of mine- that is not to go and see Radiohead at the V festival. I really would love to see Radiohead live if that included hearing them too. A chance to do that hasn’t come up yet, the nearest has been to hear the mess Marshall/Peavy amplifiers make of their music when pouring out their noise to a large audience.

Now, what’s on TV?

….oh.

A Will?

18°C, heavy showers

Feeling better, well enough to think about death. I am going to write a will.
What if I get squished under the wheels of a lorry riding to work next week? Who will get my Frank Zappa collection? Big questions to deal with? Suggestions welcome here.

3Ds Max: just to continue an August thread, here is a texture map for the Walrus. It’s overlaid with the template and saved here ¼ size. In case you didn’t know, it works like pulling a part a cardboard model and opening it out flat. Then use photoshop to create all the surface colouring and stuff.
