Whale song

15°C, even more rain. Really big drops that make bubbles in puddles. Endless.

Amazon: awaiting a CD of Whalesong, but I don’t know if I can play it. I fear it may be too melacholic,
or worse…

I love this scene, it also seems appropriate today.

One more red nightmare

15°C, grey & rainy periods.

Reassuring that visits deep into the past record collection aren’t revealing embarassing immature tastes. I say that because listening to Red by King Crimson today brought back the same hair-raising thrill that it did back in the mid 1980s, (Note- it was released in 1974). It’s down to Robert Fripp that there are harmonies and key changes that are orchestrated like "classical" music. I recall listening out for similar qualities in Mahler, or Schönberg. There is a jazzy feel in those harmonic instruments- clarinet, Sax and violin which can be heard amongst the thundering great bass guitar passages. they tap out oriental rhythms, cascades that echo the main themes and generally provide dynamic contrasts.
This album belongs in a trio with "Lark’s Tongues" and "Starless…"

Safety warning

17°C, overcast, breaking.

The Welsh countryside comes with a health warning. Perhaps they are worried that we will sue them if we slip on a hillside. We had a nice day despite the risks of being outside, away from a city. Disturbing to think that we could have slipped on the grass had it been wet,
White chalk: superb quality vinyl, thick disc with no surface noise. Only hitch is is that despite being a 12" album, there is no indication that it plays at 45rpm. Since when is it a good idea to cut a full album at 45rpm?

Into The Woods

12°C, grey gray day

To celebrate the end of term:

Just ordered this, by the lead vocalist in Arab Strap. The sound clips are promising, click the picture to go to the Amazon page with the samples on.

CD additions

11 heading for 0°C, clear.

New CDs added to the collection:

Bought for the Samuel Barber Agnus Dei; a version rather different to that performed by ExCathedra which I would still like when they re-release it.
74mins of uninterrupted birdsong, unsullied by man-made music.

Ex-Cathedra

Christmas Music by candlelight
What a Stunning performance in the Jewerly Quater. They orchestrated the pieces to carry us along which meant the audience participation bit was fully supported.
My favourites were Samuel Barber’s "Agnus Dei" and Peter Warlock’s "Benedictamus Domino" for entirely different reasons. I have new CDs. this is the third time I have seen this group perform, the best being Arvo Part and this night.

Now we’re averaging 6.6 Mbps, not bad eh?

Here and Now

14, dropping ot 8°C, changable

Here and Now is radio three’s main contemporary radio show. I have only strted listening to it recently, but am getting a lot from it already. I like hearing stuff that doesn’t leave me feeling like I have heard this sort of thing before. So much "classical" music is almost generic, the basic structures are the same, though of course nuances are fascinating. Trouble is just that- nuances. You often need to search for the best performances to get the best nuances out of any single piece.
Anyway, currently playing as I write is something by Michael Finnissey. Piano and small orchestra, playing the oddest cascades of staccato notes, fast and with guts. I’m off now to see what discs I can order online.

They’re going to take ages, possibly not ’till December, but I’ve ordered the following:

  • Agaetis Byrjun – Sigur Ros
  • Yoshimatsu – Orchestral Works
  •  All the Ends of the Earth – Contemporary & Medieval Vocal Works
  •  This Hungry Life [Live]- Tanya Donelly
  •  Why I Hate Women (Pere Ubu)
Not everything I heard on the show, but this will do.
Finally, one odd thing; my outside thermometer has started working after about 6 months of no readings. Currently 7.4°C.

Death in the Blue lake

15°C, some sun + rain

When: the "Black White & Grey" CD, by When arrived today. It sounds better than I remember- probably because I only had a tape of it before. I can see this one getting listened to a lot. Parts of it can go on my mp3 player, as can Samuel Barber’s Adagio. there must be more gems in that tape collection that need replacing on CD/LP!

On the subject of music, Tom Waits lyrics:

  Dead And Lovely

She was a middle class girl
In over her head
She thought she would
Stand up in the deep end
He had a bullet proof smile
He had money to burn
She thought she had the moon
In her pocket…

But now she’s dead
She’s so dead forever
Dead and lovely now

I ‘ve always been told to
Remember this
Don’t let a fool kiss you
Never marry for love
He was hard to impress
He knew everyone’s secrets
He wore her on his arm
Just like jewelry
He never gave but he got
He kept her on a leash
He’s not the kind of wheel
You fall asleep at

But now she’s dead
She’s so dead
Forever dead and
Lovely now

Come closer look deep
You’ve fallen fast
Just like a plane on a
Stormy sea
She made up someone to be
She made up somewhere to
Be from
This is one business in the
World where that’s no
Problem at all
Every thing that is left
They will only plow under
Soon every one you know
Will be gone

But now she’s dead
She’s so dead

Forever dead and
Lovely now

I’ve always been told to
Remember this
Don’t let a kiss fool you
Never marry for love
Now they’re all watching
The sea
What’s lost can never be broken
Her roots were sweet
But they were shallow

But now she’s dead
She’s so dead
Forever dead and
Lovely now

Circus

Tys tys

17°C, sun, rain then sun.

Yesterday’s concert was interesting. Two bands of scandinavian origin, both billed as A-side performers, but in practice….
Tys tys (Copenhagen) played the second set but were not rewarded with CD sales that Suzanne & M O got. Their music was "difficult", structure was convoluted and strange things happened to the vocals between mic & speakers. The mixing desk bloke (who also looked like a Viking) was actively involved in the music-making, bending & twisting as he modified the mix.

The Vocalist said something curious at the end of one pice. "I got a bit of a kick there", I thought something had mixed differently ot her expectation. But later when Maria Laurette Friis stood up, she was obviously a few months pregnant. See their website here.
I bought their album, thinking that I didn’t even know if I liked the stuff, only a few others lined up with me. The CD is playing in the background as I write and it sounds wonderful. Even so, it’s not easy music.

Susanna And The Magical Orchestra

S&MO Played first, most if not all, covers but played very slowly. A close delicate examination of well known tracks from Elvis, Depeche Mode, Joy Division and Prince amongst others. I only recognised some, the set finished early, or at least it seemed so. That means it was good by the way.

Again, like so often I was underwealmed by the sound system in the Glee Club. It didn’t hurt in the way that the Carling academy does, but still it had that hazy electric sound with interference and poor connections also noticable.
