America’s first Jamaican president

11°C, very dull & grey. Damp but no rain.

Some kids at work were talking about the American Election. That’s a remarkable thing itself, kids don’t usually show any interest in politics. Anyway, this particular one was pleased ot tell her friends that Obama is the first "Jamaican" US president. I queried this surrealism: "but he’s not Jamaican, he’s American"
& "he’s America’s first Black President?"
A: " you can’t say ‘black’- that’s racist"
"how can it be racist to use the word ‘black’?"
…this point she became incoherent, she’d run out of explanation.

In your underwear?

16°C, rain showers, plus sunny bits.

Favourite news story: BBC Size FF? You could get a rabbit in there!
Priceless!
The Whalesong is familiar; it must have been sampled innumerable times over the years since it was recorded (1970), Kate Bush, Pink Floyd and all the others.

Elections open to the deceased

17°C, rain, it’s only light though

Mayoral Elections are open to the dead inRomania ( isn’t that part of Transylvannia?). Laurie Anderson had a premonition to this in the late 1980s in one of her records. See here BBC
Crime: Govt. clutching at straws, look…
What about this:

The PM was responding to a Cabinet Office report suggesting people felt "cut off" from the justice system.
Louise Casey’s paper said criminals’ punishment needs to be much more "visible" to restore public confidence in the justice system.
It said many people felt it was "distant" and "unaccountable" and suggested neighbourhood police hold regular public meetings and issue leaflets so victims and local people know offenders have been caught.

Great, you’ve had your house burgled and then the local police give you a leaflet.

Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne
added: "Things like naming and shaming and high visibility tabards are gimmicks.

I took to this idea quickly this morning. I love the idea of dressing up criminals, but flourescent jackets are a dull idea. It’s just not fair on builders and road maintainence blokes, they’d find themselves dressed like criminals. Why not dress up the criminals in something they’d really dislike- they are criminals after all. What about a tweed jacket and a Fedora hat, thay’d really hate that. We’d have criminals who normally wear a white tracksuit and gold chain before getting caught would then wear tweed once they’d been found guilty!

I’m full of good ideas me.

Procedures have been put in place…

9°C, clear, still andSun again!

How that phrase grates every time it is said on the media. It is said on most news reports about one thing or another. There is something remote that forces a divide between the listener and speaker, something dehumanised.
Adults are just as bad as kids in repsect of mis-use of English. An example that is growing in frequency is using "anticipate" in place of "expect"- as in "we anticipate that your expenses claim will be submitted by Friday".
Obviously: Some are using this in every sentence, often twice. Listen out for it; then wish you hadn’t.

Kids are more likely to adopt Americanisms, like missing word endings: " we need to get to our next lesson quick(ly)"- quite a different meaning, often it is clear thay have used the wrong one. The least bright ones will mix "of" & "have", as in " I should of known". I’m not even going to mention apostrophes.
Oops- I just did.

FSX:The Chernobyl scenery is coming along apace now.(see picture below). The rivers and lakes are all done now, I’ve had a break from trying to export 3D meshes today, though the NPP model is now mapped ( but not textured). While playing about with the Sim, I discovered that there is a firework display over the Eiffel tower if you set the game clock to 00.00 on Jan 1st. Quite nicely done I’d say.

Parking and crashes

4°C, grey and E wind.

News story: BBC– This was broadcast on TV this morning. What it doesn’t say in the written article what is is shown clearly in the TV report. This family live in a house facing a long sweeping bend in the road, but on the corner of a road junction. Apparently they have had four parked cars wrecked by joy-riders loosing control on the bend in the road over the last few years.

See the map for the presumed location. My question is this- the cars that were wrecked were parked on the raod as shown in my map? In the UK it’s illegal to park within 15 metres of a road junction, so is the victim’s case affected by the fact that they habitually park in a dangerous place?

And the bear’s name is…

6°C, clear.

"A British teacher has been found guilty in Sudan of insulting religion after she allowed her primary school class to name a teddy bear Muhammad." –BBC
It strikes me that that government could do with a law that prohibits any act of making Islam look ridiculous. That would have stopped this story. You just can’t defend a religion by acting like spoof characters from a Monty Python film- you just end up looking more foolish than ever.

Here is a funny page

"Speaking as a father I do not feel this was a well thought out plan by the teacher. However, I feel that she has done nothing wrong. The children themselves should be punished for having chosen the name of our great Prophet for a lowly bear. The teacher was misguided, whereas the children were malicious. They must be brought to answer for their blasphemy."
Abdullah Al-Zawawi, Sudan

Most commentators are saying that is was an "innocent mistake", No it wasn’t! It is not a mistake to say something that doesn’t matter, it’s trivial and frviolous, this teacher hasn’t done anything wrong! The mistake was made elsewhere, the mistake of taking offense at something that is inoffensive.

Purity ring.

24°C, looks like summer is here (for now)

BBC news: schoolgirl looses courtcase after appealing against her school uniform rule:
A 16-year-old girl was not discriminated against when she was banned from wearing a "purity ring" in school, the High Court has ruled.
Lydia Playfoot was told by Millais School in Horsham, West Sussex, to remove her ring – which symbolises chastity – or face expulsion.

She said the ruling would "mean that slowly, over time, people such as school governors, employers, political organisations and others will be allowed to stop Christians from publicly expressing and practising their faith".

Playfoot) was under no obligation, by reason of her belief, to "Whatever the ring is intended to symbolise, it is a piece of jewellery," he said. "…she voluntarily accepted the uniform policy of the school and there are other means open to her to practise her belief without undue hardship or inconvenience."

Miss Playfoot was one of a group of 11 girls at her school who joined a movement called the Silver Ring Thing.

The judge ordered Miss Playfoot’s father to pay £12,000 towards the school’s legal costs.
See bbc

If she was serious about her chastity, then a ring won’t do- she’d wear a belt!

the nation changes…

19°C, sun & heavy showers

….or not.

Newsworthy stories: new premier, new "bomb" attacks. Hardly bombs, more damp squibs. Some bloke drove a burning car into Glasgow airport yesterday. Not actually a suicide attack- the driver survived with severe burns. Its not clear what all of this means, what the message is or what we are supposed to think. The security forces are on the highest alert, parts of cities get slosed now and again, and all because of the small risk of a fire started by a gas cylinder. I wonder what level of alert they will use if there is an invasion cfleet approaching British shores, or the nuclear bombers are crossing the North sea. It all seems rather silly from here.

Smoking: banned in public enclosed places. At last, we’ve wanted this for over twenty years. Maybe going to a pub won’t feel like such a dirty experience any more. We can wear nice clothes there instead of old ones that won’t matter if they end up all smelly.

I want to go cycling, but the sky wants to drop huge masses of water carried in tall clouds by westerly winds. June was wet even by wet-june standards.

WMDs

11°C, clear

Trident: latest news: the UK labour Govt have decided to buy new weapons of mass destruction. It’s not clear who they will be aimed at, or what the Gov’t will say to Iran , or Nth Korea on the matter. Something bad seem to happen to parties that get into power in the UK. The plans made during electioneering seem to get shelved along with Britain’s independance. Could there be some secret binding reason why our Prime Ministers, one after another, drop independant thinking after gaining power and meeting with the US president?
It pays not to look to long at governments as it erodes your faith in human nature.

Snowdon: climb on Saturday, that will be fun. I may even stay overnight and make the cliumb again on Sunday. Umm… what to do?
