-2 to 2°C;fog & ice

Ice: had a dodgy ride to work today. locking up the bike I noticed it feeling slimey. The hadnlebars and tubes were slippery feeling as if oily. Looking closer, I noticed crystals and realised it was ice. The bike’s metal parts were covered in slighthly crumbly ice and so was I . I had ice on my arms and reflective straps. At this point in time a 6th former feel on the tarmac I’d just ridden over. She was uninjured though. It’s appalling to think aout the conditions and by oblivious journey. If I’d known – then the journey would definitely have been made in the car.

Further to yesterday’s comments on the Cartoons row. I was going to put the heading "what’s wrong with Blasphemy" but I already said that yesterday. It’s interesting that it comes at a time that the UK government is chainging the law on "inciting releigous hatred".

I wonder if religous leaders could be charged with this new law if they were prompting terrorist acts in protest about some cartoons.

The BBC seems to have handled it calmly and very conservatively. A good analogy was drawn today with schoolkids. With badly behaved pupils, teachers are usually reluctant to provoke them, there’s no point setting them up to have a temper tantrum. Likewise…

I’m still struggling to find a reason why blasphemy could be a bad thing. It’s something to do with the nature of religion. Relgious leaders are power brokers, they are a kind of half hidden government. It seems that they use the language of spirituality to feed  their followers. Maybe religous beliefs are as fragile as I suggested yesterday. more thinks later…

slow slow slow

5°C, getting warmer

I doubt I can get much writtne here- msn .net servers are responding so slowly- it’s taken over 10 mins to open this new entry page.

Bad news for cycling today: BBC
I know accidents happen, but this is avoidable. If it’s avoidable, I don’t really think the word "accident" is the right one. The driver was not speeding, but still driving dangerously fast, the road not gritted.
"Officers have described the deaths as a "tragic accident"".
It’s as if they think there was an element of chance, or it was unavoidable. It’s clearly ok for drivers to kill cyclists as shown by this and countless other killings.

Painting: Just replaced the Final "Armover" photo in the gallery. I’m not sure it looks noticably different- but it does now have four layers of glaze on it. It certainly looks different here on the shelf- but the photo ; I’m not so sure.

Plumes

7°C

News disaster shock. The oil depot that blew up on Sunday morning is a remarkable story. Not just because of the incredible pictures , but also the incredible news sotories that are bing published about it:
Daily Mail "Apocalyptic Scenes"
Daily Express "Hell on Earth"
Do we really get the newspapers we deserve?
"Environmental disaster?", I’m not sure. Most of that black stuff is carbon isn’t it? Doesn’t that mean it will get washed out of the air when it rains? If this explosion hadn’t happened- the fuel would have been burnt extremely efficiently which releases CO2, which doesn’t get washed out when it rains.

I realise that locally – it is a disaster, but globally maybe not. I need some expert info on this.

revenge on a sparrow

8°C, clear & cold, big frost tonight

The Guardian

A sparrow that knocked over 23,000 dominoes set up for a world record attempt was shot dead. The Dutch animal protection agency began investigating the claim yesterday.

The bird flew into an exhibition centre on Monday and, after disturbing the event, was chased into a corner and shot dead. It was a common house sparrow, an endangered species. The agency plans to submit the case to prosecutors.

Endemol, the TV firm which organised the event, defended the killing, saying more than 100 people had worked for more than a month setting up the dominoes.

It’s a true story apparently, just check ths link. Revenge is such an ugly thing, if the dominos were down, isn’t it a bit late? What further danger was the poor little bird posing? A sad story.

Erratum

Sept 4th and hot weather is still here, 29°C, threatening thunderstorms too
It was Uzbekistan not Kazakstan that had a sparsely reported massacre referred to in a recent entry.
One big Oops from me!
I’ve edited the entrynow, such is the beauty of online blogs. My points in that post remain the same though.
Here is a feature on the matter from "Green Left Weekly"

Me stuff: Had a swim in the sea off Harlech beach yesterday. It was so warm! Well, Warm for British coastal waters anyway. The waves were no more than 6" high, so that counts as dead calm,  perfect swimming conditions. Seabirds were visible diving from the air to feed. Memorable!
We also stumbled across a charming little waterfall in the hills behind Llanbedr. We will be back!

What is going on?

The world’s richest nation is at a low ebb.
The first lootings struck gunshops,
The armed forces have been sent in with "shoot-to-kill" orders.
There is no drinking water, and the floodwaters are full of pollutants.
Armed gangs patrol while martial law has been imposed.
We have seen no stories of heroism, bravery or humility.
US oil prices have shot up, now gasolene has rocketed to nearly the price we normally pay.
thousands have drowned.

What is going on – they knew this was coming…

Radio

RADIO : Been listening to a lot of radio over the last week. It seems that radio listeners hear news that otthers don’t. There’s a story about a massacre of Usbebekistani protestors that is of the same scale as Tianenmen Square. I’m trying to find some links to post here but they aren’t easy to find. That parallels the story in that it was presented as the "forgotten atrocity".

Here’s an art related one. The Italians are fund-raising to preserve their artisic heritage in an innovative way:
Shock tactics to save Italian art

Wales again tomorrow for a few days. Then back to sch..

What difference does it make?

What difference will it make?

News is still unfurling, the picture patchy and thoughts are trying to collect into some whole.
Consider…
In 1940-43, the Luftwaffe dropped thousands of tons of explosives on London. That made no difference to the British "will to fight". If anything it made the civilians hate the assailants more than before. The RAF & USAAF dropped millions of tones of explosives on Germany and occupied countries up to ’45. Even in the last month of the war, there was no relaxation in determination amongst German peoples to stick it out.
What do modern terrorist bombers think our reaction will be when they use a few dozen kilos of explosives?

Perhaps it’s like the second world war where I believe it’s fair to say that there was no winner- all sides lost.

Some may well have causes that we could sympathise in, some not, but in your quest to publicise your campaigns, you have made us hate you. There is no point in finding reasoning amongst the unreasonable, but all I want to do is rationalise it. After decades of atrocities from the IRA, and now from eastern perpetrators, I still remain thoroughly baffled.

thought and sympathies to all in london.

Olympics

20°C; impertinant wind; intermittent sun; interludes of rain

The olympics are coming!

Since the blogs (well…spaces anyway) are full of reference to chavs here’s a definition.

It’s getting very windy outside, I’ve always wanted to animate a tree in wind; maybe one day when I have some time.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Oil, wind, linseed- about 45% done

Trying to revive that pavement picture, it’s getting going now that the warm/cold balance is changed. That previous picture used ridiculous colours, they were just like symbols for colours rather than the way we see things. I suspect that there are 2 sessions done since the past time I posted a picture of this little canvas. Maybe the paving slabs should be much warmer in colour nearby; fading to cold further off. The puddles need some reflections too.

who isn’t guilty

So Jackson is found not guilty

Is that just because the prosecution is of poor quality? I can’t help feeling that actually both parties are guilty, M.J. of the charges that he himself admitted to in that TV program, and the prosecution for pursuing him for his money. MJ has suffered physically, but are we supposed to be sympathetic? The US jury says it’s OK for a 46 year old man to sleep with young boys, but from this side of the atlantic- we here can be sacked for merely touching a child on the shoulder. Another and probably separate issue, arises when MJs fans offer fanatical unthinking support. Fine- so he makes pop music that appeals to large numbers, but what are we to think of in the debate about role models for young black males? Here is a man who has spent vast sums of money concealing and removing traces of his racial origins. Why is it that he still has black fans amongst the crowds at all? He clearly does not think it is good to be black, it’s to be avoided at all costs it would seem. I realise that he is hardly a "normal " person and is not representative, but that doesn’t explain the worship he receives from those fans.
