Yesterday (18th March) daytime was 12hours long, almost exactly. So why is the 21st March the official vernal equinox and not the 18th?
How mildly troubling.

Mr Crud
7°C, heavy rain
The heavens have opened, and stayed open. That cold has largely gone, at least enough to make riding the bike appealing; if only the rain would stop.
Mr Crud mudguards are fiddly to fit. There are lots of components to screw together with tiny thumbscrews and it all seems a bit flimsy. It is light though and as long as it’s aligned, they should be almost unnoticeable.
LATER: 40 miles ride and another puncture. That’s the last time i ride on a cycle-track. The 17 tooth cog seems about right, though nothing is right in today’s wind.
20th, best make a start then
-6°C,
It’s the 20th today, a good time to start christmas shopping you must agree. Icy roads are mitigating, certainly no trip to Birmingham this year. Oh, and this December is said to be the harshest for a century!
No cycling for a week it appears, the ice is against it. I have done some tiling in the kitchen. Prepare to be impressed; it’s the white tiles you know…
You can’t see the unfinished bit in this shot.
Crazy laptop widget thinks it’s -11°
3rd snow
-7°C, brighter, snow is setting harder.
Christmas Carol service at St. Pauls in Brum last night. Very nice, as was the German market. Forecast says “vewy fwozen with vewy heavy snowfalls with a bweeze picking up”. the streets of Birmingham are thick with snow, a foot deep in places.
A turbo session today then.
Here we go again
3 to -4°C
Grey grey. White, white, now dark & hard hard ice. Minus 5 tonight. Only one day to go, but I tire past the point of suspecting an oncoming cold. Is this all there is?
Respite
3°C, mostly dry & sunny
Plus temperatures today. At last a ride into work, I’ve needed this so much. The last two miles saw me with second thoughts, snow started which covered up the tarmac enough to hide the patches of ice that were so obvious earlier. No crashes though & I feel so much better- my blood feels cleaner now.
bad words
-2C snow all day,
Turbo with Throwing Muses’ “Red Heaven”: about 35-40′ worth then. It’s magical how much better I feel for this. eaten by ants feeling has gone and maybe, just maybe, I am on the wind-down towards Christmas. this has been the worst term for a long time.
Meeting after work- these things draw on & was populated by bad words. New “policies have implications for staff”, it would make sense with “consequences”, unless something is implied?
Educationalists are quick to use the wrong words for things- impact/effect, pro forma/template, they are not synonyms I tell you.
snowdayless
-1C, snowshowers & NE winds
Wound up by exercise withdrawal, but a session on the turbo-trainer has taken the edge off that uncomfortable feeling. I must make a point of doing it all again tomorrow.
What a week of horrible weather, driving is treacherous & work will not be closing unlike lots of other local schools. It’s no real badge of honour I have to say…
Chill
-5°C, to +2° back to -3°, clear & still.
Big chill starts here- this could go on for two weeks. Hope the winter is unlike the last. The draught excluder is holding fast, the difference great. A north wind will be the final test.
Work is jambpacked with stress. I want to be a lumberjack.
twenty-four hours
5°C, grey. northerlies backing
I’ve only had it one day, and it’s refusing to startup. No bleeps, no HD activity, nothing.
