Argo

16ºC,clear.
Film: Argo, tense, but not that tense, likable characters, but not that likable. A film worth seeing but don’t go out of your way, there are other films available.
Despite rather an ill weekend, I have done stuff- the garden table is finished, with dry varnish this morning. On this weekend, with no travelling, my todo list is much shorter. The daytime routine is job then nap, then another job…

I spent money yesterday, some went on a cordless drill. The old one one is shagged out, though was never great to start with. Now I want to find something to fill with holes. If there are enough holes, might the thing cease to exist?

Most nights after work, I ride the scenic route home. This adds about 2,000 kCals to my daily expenditure. With about 3,000 cal per day, for a chap my size I could work out my consumption of food. My weight stays about the same, so I must eat 5,000 a day. Is that right, have I missed something?

Calm before…

15C, big storm approaches.
The storm, a opportunity arose this morning with grey sky but no real rain, yet. So what happens, I woke with a pre-cold throat, dammit.
It’s been a long run since the last cold- was it Easter?

Dennis,

17°C,cloud.
For the first time in twenty years, I am going to the dentist today. A filling dropped out last winter and today it will be replaced. There was a moment a few weeks ago in the check-up that reminded me of childhood trips to church. We were supposed to confess sins, but being kids we hadn’t done anything wrong so we made things up. Aren’t kids supposed to be innocent anyway, but that was the catholic church. That guilt ridden haven for child molesters, never could get morality right.
Anyway, the Dennis asked me how long since my last appointment (confession). Her mouth fell open at the answer. My choice.

Been, done it and caved in to the anaesthetic. She said it would take 20-30 minutes- I thought that meant drilling so agreed to the needle. She was only cleaning out the hole for the new filling and only drilled for another few minutes. I now have a properly working white tooth.

I resisted the temptation to say: “see you in another twenty years” as I left.

I hoped to get weight down this summer so I can enjoy cycling more. 200lbs seemed a good number to aim for.
Well, here I am, 198lbs. It won’t last though. Normally, I gain half a stone in the winter. That itself is not such a problem, it’s good to have some resources in case you get ill.
As an aside

This is the tree stump where I have cooked supper in Glen Coe over the last three years. Nostalgic moment.

Heatwave.

We have a heatwave to come. Rumours are of two weeks worth but ten days seems more likely. England has not had hot sunny days in July since 2007. The whole nation seems delighted.
Interestingly, there is a significant number that express a dislike of summer. Perhaps view feel some social pressure to keep quiet about it though, so there could be many people who feel that way.
I am not one.

12°C, light cloud
I return: skipped a few rides this week with a non-descript lack. Not enough to call it a cold, but I presume it was one in the background. Or was…
A colleague talked about how she is a carrier, so she doesn’t get too many colds but her husband does. He thinks she brings them home from school. Sounds like a plausible idea that I can relate to.
Anyway, there is a light easterly breeze which brings snows of cherry blossom.

Birch spore rhinitus

9°C, clear, icy at night.
Sneezes- but no cold. It’s just like hay-fever so I blame tree spores.
The campsite I had in mind has not opened their canoes, said because the water is too cold. Really? I can sometimes see people in boats, breaking thin ice as they go. Go on, let me go out.
I have a three-season sleeping bag, with a bivvy to pull over if it’s still too cold in the dead of the night..
So, this change of plan- a different site with wood burners and better shelter from the dry, bitter northerly wind.

First ride

6°C, V. Windy, sun. CK:43miles
Rode a loop in Lancashire- Parbold and the flatlands by Bank. The hedges were low and sparse so no shelter from a strong westerly. Those last miles were hard and slow even on the 42×17. I was standing on the pedals even on level roads.
I have lost form, even though I was reluctant to admit it.
Next week, I should do the same milage and see how it feels. Then, if that’s okay, add 10 more the week after.
