Child sexualisation

19°C, clear. Comfortable.

Children are growing up too early. The news story of the season this year: The chattering classes are upset about media forces on young children, padded bras for under 11s, hip-thrusting semi-nude dancing on popular music shows, make-up on pre-teens.

“children are experiencing too much too young in terms of sexualised images and aggressive advertising

I speculate that the younger children are not being “sexualised”, they probably don’t know what on earth that means. My current thinking is that it’s a manifestation of consumerism. Child-cosmetics, I have to admit to some dis-comfort here; hence I am interested in the debate. Young girls using cosmetics, painting themselves and looking rather incongruous in their war-paint. It’s lamentable in adult women in my view, but in children, it’s rather disturbing.  They do represent a market, and yes, are probably being targeted by the ad-men. That thought does scare some; see the Pinkstinks website.

It looks to me as if the under 11s are emulating the teenagers, the teenagers are emulating the twenty-somethings, the thirty-somethings are holding onto their youth and the forty-somethings have their arms folded and are tut-tutting at the youngsters.

From their perspective, the under 11s are imitating older children as they always have done. Was it ever thus? I can’t see any way of preventing or restricting it all. Some may be guilty of projecting adult desires onto an age group that can’t possibly know what sexualisation means.
Is there is simply too much money available. That money is like a drug, it’s intoxication is irresistible to most, it does seem to overpower any remnants of idealism that people may hold. As you can guess, I don’t always like western modern capitalism, I have a distaste for any decadence anywhere.
Has feminism been beaten back by consumerism? I have a horrible feeling that it has.
See Pinkstinks.

electrical skies

21°C, close & warm, storms brewing.

Nearly two months of dry, now the lightening.
It has been a bad day for amphibians. He was only crossing to get to a stream, I tried to help. On the ride to work, he was flopping in the other lane. I grasped the brakes and put the bike down, turned and waited for the traffic to clear. the first few straddled him, then I looked left to check it was clear & looked back. Now he was lying on his back, all limp & lifeless. Damn, bad start to the day. I grieved quietly for him all day. I really wanted to save him.

Large globe raindrops now tap on glass and crackle in growing puddles. I shall go and listen.

Alternative Voting system has been rejected by voters tonight. Why, was it too complex? Did so few do the maths? I’ve waited 20 years to see some semblance of democracy appear in British politics: it seems that this nation will get the politicians it deserves. Don’t forget that Britain’s favourite newspaper is the Daily Mail.

Obama-1/Osama-1

15°C, clear.

Am I the only one uncomfortable with this story? An unarmed suspect is shot by USA forces on a raid in a foreign country that wasn’t aware of it happening. The press is full of gleeful relatives of the Twin towers atrocity victims, jubilant American citizens and pretty much, everyone else. Will the White house release the video footage shot at the time so we can all see what happened in the Coliseum? The guy has not admitted his supposed role in the events he is attributed with, he was never charged, all that was skipped out. Forget any trial,  straight to the execution.
Obama is a christian, right? What happened to “thou shall not kill”? Does he get excommunicated now?
I sit uncomfortably with all this.

There’s going to be a Royal wedding.

Bit chilly at 8°C this morning. Later 16°C

I know this because: a/ we have no work on Friday, b/ the media are ramming it down our throats like fois gras. At a cyclists’ cafe today: some of the old boys recalled a royal wedding back in the 1980s. Apparently “you didn’t see any females all day last time”. That means women I assume, you could find female cattle in fields and brown blackbird foraging for food, bet they were talking about humans. By implication, they (the women) were all watching the television.

It’s Monday-thursday

it’s going to be hot 23°C? We’re going to have known nothing like it.

Monday-thursday: a day where the queen gives arms to the poor. Armed, one day the poor will rise up and it will become all Citizen-Smith here. Or something like that.
I have too much of a cold to enjoy the hot weather, dammit, I shall not complain.

Alternative vote: The Tories say that the Politician with the 3rd most votes will get in. They say, according to this leaflet, that there are no wasted votes in FPtP (First past the post). It looks to me as if they have taken all the evidence and drawn the diametrically opposite conclusions. The No voters look to be in the majority in the polls now, I suspect that people simply don’t understand how it works; plus the No-campaigners are lying about its consequences. All they have to do is use the numbers to illustrate advantages (or otherwise) then we could make up our minds. Perhaps the root of the problem is that they’re all afraid of talking numbers; such a fear is widespread. Politicians still haven’t really grasped why we, the public, hate them.

Point six percent

12°C, windy & grey cloud.

Biggest government spending cuts, blah blah. It turns out that they have cut 0.6% off the total public spending budget according to the Spectator magazine. If the press are ot be believed- the cuts are “savage”, “deep” or “swinging”- we’re told they amount to 10% or more of Govt. expenditure.

Burning books madness: BBC -Afghanis  rioting over some loony priest in the US who burned a copy of The Qu’ran. It’s not a rare book, nor was it an expensive one- you can get a copy from Amazon for about £5. So why riot so much that people get killed? That stupid pasteur is only doing it for the publicity, the stupid media are happy to give him just that and now people have died raging about it.
It’s only a book.

A principle?

8°C, drizzle

Parliament is arguing over Prisoners’ right to vote BBC. It seems to be emotive stuff for some, but not I. I just don’t see what difference it makes either way. Apparently, few prisoners vote anyway- they are largely apolitical, as groups of people go. Perhaps I shouldn’t forget that new class of prisoners- the corrupt MPs. Should they vote- I’d say no. the prisoners are quite excited by this story, there is talk of them receiving compensation for their violation of human rights (under the UDHR). No wonder they’re excited, they’re in for some free money (villans like that).

Maybe will ride tomorrow, okay I care about something. It’s been a few weeks since I rode to work, and the physiotherapy is not exactly easy. I was hugely relieved when they said I should continue with normal exercise- but I have to add some daily heel-ups to strengthen my tendons.

get the dog-hair out with this.Domestic: this halves the time to takes to clean this house. Cylinder vacuums are good at getting dust out, but the dog-hair clings like velcro. Hope it lasts a reasonable amount of time.
