Crymods

2°C, sun & rain

Nearly there. Cheerfulness has returned, feeling cold all gone, but I still need a lot of sleep- over 7 hours!

Far Cry: some interesting sites for "modding" the game.
There is a free exporter for 3ds Max, so it’s possible to make models for the game.
Crysource: mostly in German, but that’s not too much of a problem.
I don’t know if I will follow this up or not. Who knows?
Far Cry maps.com: page of downloads to play in Far Cry.

Linseed: working on a page of rough sketches, which is more trying out ideas and a warm-up than any planned finished piece. Warm-up is os important in drawing & painting- it gets you rmind into the right mood and loosens up the muscles for good co-ordination.

66 miles

2°C, windy & some rain

Cycling: started late after the time it takes to fit a new cassette. Even with new gears it doesn’t change gear that well. Sometimes it needs a double-click. Shimano gears have never worked well for me, not like Campagnolo which are always excellent.

Flash: testing Curious Labs Poser to see what swf files look like exported from there. It’s come out quite small at 210Kb. Even this seems to need a pre-loader; so if it seems to stick after you’ve pressed play- then just reload the page, it should be ok then. There must be some way of using templates to generate new Flash projects, that could include a standard preloader as well as credits at the end.

I’m very tired now, so it can have a preloader added tomorrow. It’s a nice kind of tiredness though, brought on by cycling up steep hills with icy cold air in my face.

Far Cry – finished

2°C, Snow.

Far Cry: finished it. I supppose if I’d bought this game ( it was a loan) then it would be good value for money. I’ve played it for nearly two months now, (installed on 2nd January 2006) so cost per hour is very good. I’m trying out previous routes because it’s a game with many alternative ways of completing levels.

Pacific Fighters: the new patch has fixed problems that were putting me off loading it up at all. Now it’s quite usable again.

Pro Desktop tutorial

3°C, cold wind

Busy again in the world of the interweb. Uploaded a new CAD tutorial made at school, but I posted a copy on my site. Pro Desktop is a free CAD program which is quite popular in schools , made by the same people who do Pro Engineer.
Here is the tutorial: Pro Desktop Hinge
I usually upload my tutorials for proof-reading, it seems easier to spot errors when on line (don’t know why).

Flashing again…

4°C,

Flash: another update to my Flash movie file. You can see it here:
The preloader isn’t quite ready yet, if it seems stuck, you may find a button called End, press that then choose Start. that should fix it untill I finish the into.
Let me know if it works properly. It’s tricky testing from here, because the file is already loaded into my temporary cache, so it runs properly every time (apart from the first).

Here is another useful link to excellent Actionscript tutorials, and other good Flash methods. OPEN ( SHIFT click)

obsessive

1.9°C, same as yesterday(near enough).

Far Cry: it’s truly an addictive game. I knew there would be a part where mutants turn up. It could have been the point that spoils it all, leading to uninstalling the game. However it’s appeared as a natural continuation to the story. Some of the cut scenes are rather poorly done, the animation should be a lot better. It’s a shame because the models and rendering quality are decent.

Sleeplessness: let’s see how it goes tonight. Now: camomile.

Damn spam

7°C,

Re:Hello– 76 spam posts today. I cope with them now by setting all my emails to go into the deleted items folder; unless the sender is on my list. This gets rid of most spam. However, recently a new rouse is to send a reply when the post is deleted. So as the deleted items folder is cleared, suddenly a group of posts appears in the outbox. Those posts that do that- always have Re:Hello in teh subject field.
Bad bad bad! That means the spammers get confirmation that the address is valid and then send even more irrelevant pap.

What a busy day I’ve had! Watched sunrise while walking the Ladies. I beat a car wheel back into shape so it can have the tyre put back on. Installed a new light at home; shopped at the italian market; painting (see above); washed the car; took car wheel to Kwikfit; read a bit of that Cosmology book; slept off lunch.

Far Cry

5°C, from 7°, like yesterday.

Far Cry is a computer game- a First Person Shooter. I’ve always hated FPS games in the past- I consider flight sims "my thing". I like the feeling of engagement, reading up on its history, technology,  tactics; these things open up a new world. Before Il-2 Sturmovic I’d never heard of Smolensk, Viasma, Schisselburg, Novossorisk and hundreds of others. I have to admit that I practise* Pacific Fighters just so I don’t get rusty for Saturday’s online games which I often take part.

Anyway, Far Cry has surprised me by being good fun. It’s not tied to a single solution to problems like other FPSs I have come across. I hated Medal of Honor*, it attempts some historical accuracy but you can grab a health pack when you’ve been shot or blown up then get up and carry on running. I scrapped that one. I’m repelled by games with silly scary monsters, kid’s stuff. This does seem to strike a balance between reality and the genre of fps games. I am aware, however, that this game can be completed and be done with. That is- once the levels are finished, then you may as well un-install it. Except it comes with a built-in level editor and map builder. I doubt that really expands the game without a lot of time expended. Il-2 missions are quite easy to build; you only need to have a reference for historical facts to ensure believable missions. Most fps games are far too short. This promises a good 20 hours of gameplay- and that’s said by expereinced gamers. I am not one – but still, I can’t see this still running for years- like Il-2 still does.

The Meteor: I’m still reading up on this, other sites I have looked at suggest it has enough plus points to justify taking it to a specialist.

I have had some difficulty choosing the spelling for that, alt:"practice".
