3C, some sun
Big melt. Not melting fast enough to go out on the bike, so I used the turbo instead.

-1°C & dropping.
The night will warm a little towards dawn. It’s dry out there so a ride in tomorrow could be done. Bitterly cold yes, but there is no water to freeze in this high pressure atmosphere. Rain is coming down the Northern Approaches in a few days. The ‘S’ word was mentioned in forecasts by the weekend. I will prepare the bike now.
3°C, SW winds strong. Rain/sleet developing
The best thing about today: early this morning, at 7am, I was out with the dogs and I glanced up. Perhaps I glance up often, perhaps not. But on this occasion there was a meteorite shooting down to the west. It was a bright one too, at least as bright as Jupiter. That object has existed for thousands of millions of years and then ceased to exist in less than a second. It will stay with me for longer than that (the split second, not the millions of years). It may have been a Geminid.
This is the worst kind of weather for my house- the winds have swung round to the South-West so it blows across my house. It feels as if there is a window open somewhere. So far this winter it has blown along the ridgeline which doesn’t drive any draughts in this house. Temperatures are heading down to zero but at least the draw is good on my coal fire.
10°C, heavy showers
Compared to last year, it’s remarkable that we’re well into November, and my house’s central heating is still switched off. Last year, we were receiving warning of impending “arctic weather”, but this time we’re emerging from the warmest October on record. There is always some weather record broken every year, so maybe that’s no story.
Mid night-time hunger: woken in the night by rumblings, this has happened a few times this month.
Film: The Infidel– a spoof on the UK Muslin/Jewish experience in Britain. It raised a few laughs with us, but was, on the whole, rather feeble and ‘forced’. If you get the chance- don’t bother.
Just to clarify, it’s not an Indian summer until the weekend- it has to be October or November before we can properly use the term..
It’s only a few degrees below the August temperature in Corsica, today peaked at 27.5°C. Tis a pity that I am drained by a cold. Need lots of sleep here, so excuse me…
24°C
Soft, cool milky mist early today, soon burnt off by the hot sun. Why can’t this weather be backdated to that wet week in Wales of August last?

16°C, expect the unexpected.
Weather fronts moving up from the south will bring periods of uncertainty to areas of the Midlands. Locally, there could be patches of wild guessing amid spots of general accuracy. As the day wears on, expect some improvement overall but what actually happens remains open under the darkest clouds. The outlook for the week is of some days of normality ans some unseasonal accuracy too. Early reports from listeners in the far west indicate that a butterfly has flapped its wings, we will keep you informed on any developments on this channel during the coming week.
16C, light clouds, but…
It’s coming: a new cold, it’s now cold outside, but I’m not warm inside.

And it’s got nothing to do with my home heating not working. The boiler won’t light, but the repair man is dealing with that one. The timing couldn’t be better, it’s normally another month before I put the heating on in this house.
16°C, towering cumulonimbus- they missed me, just. CR:48 miles

Late ride today, with only limited time before sunset at 19.15, so you want to freesteady miles, unimpeded by traffic, then this happens- it’s milking time. Those ladies weren’t in a hurry, many stopped at that big puddle on the right to drink, others just toddled off on their daily routine.
Blimey, those ladies looked full.
11C, rain. CR:60
Only to echo last week, the GCSE results are out today, likely to be the 24th consecutive year of higher results. The changed course structure will get some of the credit this time, it’s more modular now, so girls will probably do better. This story is worn out.
BBC The Education minister wants to end modularity, so perhaps we’ll see the boys catch up from nest year. The Daily Mail report was interesting, in almost every respect, they got their fact diametrically opposite to the truth. They said boys were closing the gap (the gap has widened), that the yearly grade inflation (which they blamed on Labour) had finished (the increase is about the same as last year). They couldn’t have got it more wrong. Why do people buy this newspaper, everything they print is wrong?
Later: Sunshine after an afternoon decorating. Rode for 60 miles and felt really strong. No aches, stiffness or discomfort, the ride simply flowed nicely. The end of the summer holidays is often like this.
