A badger.

6°C, still, dry and clear.
I rode Arrow home with MapMyRide+! Distance: 30.4mi, time: 02:00:10, pace: 3:56min/mi, speed: 15.3mi/h.

After an annoying afternoon at work trying to get mailmerge to work properly, I rode home. Conditions were ideal, very dry, no real wind and not too cold.
Legs were full of energy, and I enjoyed the feeling of speed in 0in cool dark air of evening. In these dry conditions, the dust on roads is white. This is great, the lights have more effect, they reach further.
Today, despite a slow puncture, I totalled 40 miles. Result.

To cap it all, I caught a badger in the headlights. He scurried along the edge of a hedge. Curiosity, this was the same stretch of road that I encountered the bat last year.
Remember, I rode there and a bat flew along immediately in front of me in the same direction. Remember how enchanted I was?
The badger was charming too.

I like riding at night.

Bats.

Commute- Distance: 23.20mi, time: 01:34:58, pace: 4:06min/mi, speed: 14.6mi/h.

A ride home through quiet country roads. I saw many things, mist forming in the corners of fields, the setting sun, stars appearing, Jupiter, and bats.
The first ones were notable in the corner of my eye, but then one flew in front. It flitted in before me as I rode at about 15mph. There it was, for about 10 seconds before escaping across the hedge.
That made my day.

End of term.

I rode with MapMyRide! Distance: 37.45mi, time: 02:39:28, speed: 14.09mi/h.

A pretty poor average speed, though I did have my school bag on the back and many roads were coated in slimey red mud.
What a fine way to end a long term!
Most years, I get home and feel a bit of anti-climax. Today, I buzzed with energy and a deep contentment.
I would have lost my mind years ago if there was no physical release like this. Car drivers must have boundless patience and resilience to do the daily commute. All those hours accumulated in traffic jams. Months of your life spent sitting, waiting, polluting. The expense! You have to admire them.

Dark lanes after work.

Thirty-five miles today, a work day! That’s not bad, and after feeling so off yesterday. I could have ridden more but I got hungry.
The old lights have a charger fault, there is a poor connection that means it does not always charge fully. I will have in get the soldering iron out soon.

Counting games.

C, clear,still.
Commuting is mostly dull. So, I pass the time standing in traffic making up counting games. Today, I counted the cars driving with only one headlight. Coming back from Walsall, there were 14 seen in the first 3 miles. Then, only one more in the remaining 7. Does that mean Walsall drivers are 14 times more likely to drive a faulty car? It’s not because they are poor, headlight bulbs are only £5 each, and easy to fit.

Be more happier!

9C, light wind,rain till hometime.
CA-16 miles.
Dark lanes route. Started with an amusing incident. Crossing a junction, the car opposite pulled forward at the same time. But, he turned right, in front of me. I called out “Indicate!” then as he drove away, shouted “YOU SHOULD BE MORE HAPPIER!”.
I was more happier until I met a dangerous driver.

This ride was in question all afternoon, the heavy rain seemed non-stop. It cleared in time, so I took the 16 mile lane route. Even with wet, black roads, the visibility was good enough.
It seems that these lights are holding their charge better as the week wore on. Could it be that the training period that new batteries need should be done with batteries that have been left in storage all summer?

12mph.

15ºC, E wind.
Drive- heavy traffic and mostly stationary. Average speed was 12mph, meaning it took over 50 minutes to get there. I drove because I am still ill, but what about all the other drivers? Why are they in their cars? I don’t know where they get the patience, why don’t more of them do the obvious?

Get up!

11C, nice day to come.
Woke early: an unusual cause this time- hunger. Maybe it’s these extended commutes and all those extra calories. The extensions may only be 25-35 miles but they are a bit faster than average at 16-17 mph too. That’s not bad with a work bag on the back and a day’s work done.

New wheels.

17C, light MW, 4/5 cloud.
Got new wheels. Though the rest of the car is over ten years old. Much of the reason to change the wheels was cosmetic, plus a worry that the old rims were buckled. Now they are fitted, I am surprised by the improvements- lighter steering, no wobble, and it’s much quieter.

ride home: another extended route, 21 miles, double the usual commute. I have to wonder how long I can sustain these rather refreshing addons. No doubt the equinox will impose next month.

Extended the commute home today.
Did consider this route before the big holiday but either rushed good and grabbed the race bike, of rode further west. Its a good route though. I was surprised by how quiet some of those roads were not long after rush-hour.
