I needed that!

5°C, light cloud and no wind.

This steel bridge is on my route to work. Today’s ride was more relaxed with enough time to stop for photos. The galvanized slats make a terrible noise as you ride over. The noise is so bad that your ears ring afterwards. I detest that bridge. Remarkable is how full the River Douglass.

Where are those overshoes, I really need them? With half of my stuff in boxes, there remain things I cannot find yet.

Hibernate in the shed.

8°C, storms brewing, strong W. Heavy rain.
This moth has chosen the window frame inside the shed to spend the winter in a very sluggish state. He was on the glass, but settled here after I accidentally dislodged him. Maybe he’s better off there as the glass can get very cold in the coming winter.
Dreadful weather is looming in the northern approaches. It’s said to take quite some time to move out. The more hysterical papers call it a “weather bomb”, a huge drop in pressure in short time.

Promise to self: look out for him, with care, he could make it.

Ten degrees

Sun and showers, 4°C, NW breeze.
Cold house, the kitchen was 10°C when I got home tonight. It’s a few degrees higher now and the fire is roaring in the front room.
The cold has penetrated deeply today, it reached its fingers beneath skin, veins and muscles.
At fifty years old, I am yet to learn to like winter.

Drawing in my work diary, it’s only an inch across.

Depths.

4°C, windy, some hail showers,
No ride, latent virus saps my energy so I am in rest phase. I can’t tell whether this cold will erupt fully or fizzle out losing the fight with my immune system.

Hoar frost on my car yesterday morning. The drive home was interrupted by three crashes. The worst stopped traffic for half an hour so I switched off and got my Murakami book out. Divers on the M6 don’t make the connection between tailgating and long delays after each collision.

Creaky ride.

CA-ride: Distance: 63.43mi, time: 04:14:13, speed: 14.97mi/h.

Dry, though there were still floods to ride through. The sun shone, and little wind blew. The only blemish was a distracting creaking sound from either the saddle or maybe, the bottom-bracket. Those Campag brackets have a habit of un-screwing themselves, slowly and slightly. Just enough to make quite a noise.

Derby lane snowdrifts.

4C,cold light snow showers.
Rode in Leicestershire with MapMyRide! Distance: 51.22mi, time: 03:44:45, http://mapmyride.com/view_route?r=9110435700007763969
Dry but Derby lane was impassable because of snow drifts. Other cyclists warned me about the route, but the northern end of the road was clear. So, I turned in. Snow has drifted where there were no fences and wind had blown straight off the fields. I walked the bike over the crunchy snow/ice; bemused.

That dreadful easterly wind has eased too. Shame I didn’t get photo, but it was too cold to stop.
A great way to start the Easter holiday. 51 miles has left me all warm, right through a night that reached -4C.
All is well. Today, I will take the winter bike in for a service so will ride the fixed for the next week.

Winter marches on.

4°C, grey,
Drawing on: snow forecast for tomorrow, winter is stubborn this year. Yes, we have been spoilt by a string of early springs. Nearly Easter, but the magnolia is nowhere near in bloom.
Temperatures have topped 4°C over this last few weeks. At least I can ride to work, the ice is relatively minor.

Heavy Snow says the Met office. Winds will average 15 mph, so some drifting likely.

Ince Blundell

4°C, NW breeze. CK: 22.3 miles.

Fixed 42×17 gear rode with MapMyRide! Distance: 22.31mi, time: 01:35:22, pace: 4:16min/mi, speed: 14.04mi/h.

Ince Blundell is, today, a newly added shortcut away from the Formby-Southport dragstrip. What a funny place though, it has lots of bungalows, and what appears to be bytes large cemetery. So, a place to go to in your latter years. I would be nervous buying there: it’s so flat, low and near the sea.

Good to ride in the sun even if a bit cold without my warmest kit.
