Progress, Jake.

I rode 8-speed with MapMyRide+! Distance: 23.84mi, time: 01:36:06, pace: 4:02min/mi, speed: 14.88mi/h. http://mapmyride.com/workout/837206651 Windy ride home with some decent split times. Some due to the brisk wind, some due to my feeling upbeat about my new bike. Evans rang me today to say their supplier has my Kona in stock. It’s on order and I set the Cycle-to-work scheme in motion. I could have it by the end of January. The only drawback is, they can’t get it in blue. They are sending the yellow version. ¿♡?

The photo is only a shop. Looks more like a scene from a ufo film. Strange, the things you see while you are out in the night.

One puncture for me..

5°C, moderate W, dry and clear.
Commute 18 miles.
Ordinary ride home marred by a puncture. A forced stop in the dark is never welcome but fortune smiled. There was a pub nearby with blazing bright carpark lights. So I carefully fixed it, really don’t want it to go down in some inky black lane.
After another 5 miles, there was another guy fixing his puncture, so I stopped for a chat. Nice bloke.
No sign of comet Q2 near Orion, a veil of cloud in just the wrong place.

Expensive whisky in the supermarket. Decimal places are important Co-op.

Back to work.

5°C, light SW, grey.
New term. Straight into the darkest mornings of the year. Sunrise has only improved by 2 minutes since mid-winter. Whereas street has improved by 16 minutes. Rapid change is coming though. It only takes two weeks for the light at the end of the tunnel to get switched back on.

Half an hour before sunrise, this view was worth pulling over in the car. This is a narrow sunken lane with muddy passing spaces. I got out and took the picture and slowly slid sideways in the mud.

After the rain.

Cold with big puddles everywhere. 4°C, light N.
Rode 8-speed, MapMyRide+! Distance: 34.4mi, time: 02:25:54, pace: 4:14min/mi, speed: 14.2mi/h.

Rain all day seemed endless. But end it did. 2.30pm the sun broke through so off I went.

Came home in the dark which descended later than at solstice.
It may be too icy to ride tomorrow, so this is am insurance ride.

First 25.

strong wind SSW, showers but mild: 12°C.

I rode fixed with MapMyRide+! Distance: 24.8mi, time: 01:43:50, pace: 4:11min/mi, speed: 14.32mi/h.

Strong winds make careful route planning more important. On a single-speed bike the best approach is to include long cross-wind sections. On New year’s Day traffic is light, on a wet day, there are few boy-racers so this was a good outing.

Birkdale Cemetery, a magnet for Dr Who fans. I had to take these pictures without blinking, honestly!

Last ride this year.

I rode fixed with MapMyRide+! Distance: 18.92mi, time: 01:17:40, pace: 4:06min/mi, speed: 14.62mi/h.

Zero the clocks tomorrow, the year’s milage is complete. Not quite matched my target of 6,000 miles. Not short by many.

imageAccording to MapMyRide: 5,844.7miles for 2014. That’s about 600 miles more than 2013.
____________
Here is the breakdown:
Arrow: 3193.1
Racelite: 934.3
Kona: 1449.8

Cold ride on wet roads.

5°C, light SSW breeze, wet roads but no rain.
I rode fixed with MapMyRide+! Distance: 38.9mi, time: 02:36:23, pace: 4:01min/mi, speed: 14.9mi/h.

Slow, cold but steady side. Even in the 17t, the moderate pace felt like an effort.

Building heavy clouds with icy tops. They look so solid, but the feathery tops are somewhat ominous. Light snow came later in the evening.

LPs while wrapping.

10°C, windy with a dose of sun.
Feeling ill can make us feel inadequate sometimes, as though we have failed somehow. I failed to cycle this week. There was nothing I could put a finger on, just that latent cold feeling.
What must it be like for those with serious, or chronic illnesses?
Anyway, today I wrap. The room is filled with the smell of fresh coffee and milky golden winter sun filters through the skeleton trees.
Playing music to give my ears something to do.

This is a double by Tricky. Too often, I forget how clear this stereo sounds. That record player is thirty years old!
It wasn’t the technology that killed off vinyl, nor the sound quality.
The next album I put on was Led Zeppelin. The sound was clear but noticeably compressed. Producers used to do that so the disc would sound acceptable on cheaper record players. That meant the sound was worse for all of us. Then, along came CD which promised clarity of sound and ease of use. It delivered on the latter. Now, thirty years later, LP sales have risen slightly and occupy a clear place in the market. Modern records, like the one by Tricky, sound better than ever. Producers no long have to cater for the mass market. The sound quality is better though the technology is the same (at our end).

Stay in.

10°C, brisk W. Dry and very grey.
Can’t tell what’s going on, but no ride today. Perhaps a virus.

It’s a shame that Christmas is further into the holiday this year. Even my neighbours, both sides, agree that Christmas spoils an otherwise good holiday.
Not a wasted day though. I spent some hours brushing up on Python programming. This is preparation for teaching so I am looking for alternative ways to solve coursework tasks.
