Before the ride home from work, I looked at Google maps to find an alternative route. Though the ride down Parbold Hill is fun, there is a horrible bottleneck at the bottom. There must be an alternative. There is and I don’t mind a few miles extra if the roads are quiet. The real problem is its complexity, so many turns and each an opportunity for error.

It was these errors that caused problems. First, a tiny single-track lane, next was the busy road through Burscough. Dodging traffic with low sun in you eyes was difficult.

Next time will be better.

Barn Owl.

Extended ride across the Tame valley. Near the river, well away from any lights apart from my own I saw a shape above. It could have been a reflection in the rim of my glasses but it wasn’t. Flapping slowly and more notably- in utter silence. A Barn Owl was flying across my path to the east. Wonderful.

Commute.

19°C, light wind and sky. Night drawing in.

Yes, energy is back. The fizz is anyway. Another week and my legs should feel stronger. For now, I shall ride short routes.

Besides, I am off to read my book. It’s Montserrat’s Cruel Sea. The language is fascinating; naval terminology and 1940’s speech.

Dark, single-track lanes.

11ºC,cold, dry and clear.
First ride though those narrow lanes I have explored recently. It felt like a test, to find out whether view are safe in the dark. Tonight, they were. As long as there is no ice or slippery mud, then it should work well enough.
It’s great to see so little traffic.

First 100

8°C, mild wet and windy.
Soaked riding in yesterday. A short sharp one hit half-way to work. The sky was clear when I set off, and again when I got there. But the shower was so heavy that cold trickles ran down my neck inside my shirt and down my arms. For a few minutes, I was forced to stop because I could not see. That was the hail part.
Still, the week’s total stands at one hundred miles. A good start.
