MapMyfail.

11°C, light NW..slight snow.
MapMyRide failed yesterday. The app refused to communicate with the GPS sensor. Other GPS apps worked as expected, but not MapMyRide. Strange because there were no updates that could be a simple explanation. Other software updates?

Eventually, I decided to uninstall the app and replace it. However, using the app manager, I noticed the Clear Data button, so tried that.
After logging in again, success!

Mapmyride has new bugs since the last update. Firstly, this good ride not completed the whole course of the ride. It only recorded half.
Their website can be used to update, or add new rides (or hikes). The app cannot synchronise from the site though.
Still enjoying the new sprightly wheels. This last few rides are considerably faster, over 17mph. This ride takes the year’s milage over 1,021 miles. That means it’s time to check the chain for year.
Best of all, it’s fun.
Look that this cloud-

Last hot day?

21°C, clear start.
Heavy rain is coming tomorrow. Perhaps this will stand as the last day of summer.

I took a variation on yesterday’s route through lanes and villages. On a fine day like, this it was pure pleasure rather than a rush to get home.
Tomorrow, there may be heavy rain.

Alstonefield ride.

30°C, no wind, no clouds.

I rode up with the Burton club, view were heading to the Peak District for some hill climbs. They were quick and seem a disciplined bunch. I only got nervous on stretches with deep pot-holes.
Anyway, I turned off and made my own way to the Peaks with a cafe stop at Ilam.

From there, the route took me further north to Alstonefield and Milldale. There is a back route into Milldale by a road marked as impassible. Impassible roads are a bad idea, they are impassible. It was narrow and dipped down into the gorge at 1:7. I slid back, gripped the drops for a better grasp of the brake lever and took it slowly. My eyes darted from one side to another looking for places to crash should a brake cable break.
They held.

Out of Milldale there is a daunting hill to the east which worked out well. there were more steep hills which I took with renewed confidence and I arrived home feeling reasonably fresh. I credit the extra water I drank for feeling good even after eighty miles.

Dust devil.

18°C, clear blue, light wind.

The bike ran smoothly, all that work in the winter to replace bearings and so on, has transformed the bike. Gone are the annoying clicks, skipping gears and poor handling. It feels new, and more comfortable than I can remember for years.

Then, a natural phenomenon not seen by me for years. A dust devil swept across a ploughed field near Clifton Campville. I stopped to watch, fascinated. Not seen one since the early 1990s.

Tuesday twenty.

8°C,Clear sky, warmer.

Very dry, dusty in places with some lumps of snow remaining. Got an idea for the weekend though- go to Wales and camp by Llyn Gwynant. If the hills are too icy to venture high, then spend time in a canoe, with low-land walks for the rest of the time. Their website says the valley floors are free of snow. I could venture up to the snowline with my main camera. That should mean that it’s easy to get up to the Watkins stone, great photos can be found up there.
Night temperatures shouldn’t be too far below freezing, but forecasts warn of ice and the need for crampons. I should do a course at Plas-y-brenin to be safe.
